About the Project
Background, development plan and editorial approach of World of Bacteria, an educational visual atlas of medically important bacteria and other microorganisms.
Why this project exists
World of Bacteria is being developed as an online-accessible photographic atlas focused primarily on clinically important bacteria. Its purpose is to make realistic laboratory images of microorganisms more available to students, laboratory professionals, clinicians and other readers interested in medical microbiology.
Many bacterial species are described well in textbooks and scientific databases, but high-quality visual documentation of their colony morphology, microscopic appearance and diagnostic context is often scattered, incomplete or difficult to access. This project aims to help fill that gap by presenting original laboratory photographs together with concise explanatory text.
The atlas is intended as an educational resource. It is not designed to replace validated diagnostic protocols, laboratory standards or clinical guidelines. Instead, it offers a visual supplement to established microbiological education and routine diagnostic reasoning.
Development plan
The project is planned as a gradual, multi-stage atlas. Because the material is based on real photographic documentation from microbiological laboratory practice, the content will be expanded step by step as suitable images and accompanying descriptions become available.
Phase 1: Core atlas structure
The first phase focuses on creating the basic structure of the atlas: individual species pages with a concise overview, diagnostic notes and four core laboratory photographs with captions. The intended introductory scope is approximately 70 Gram-positive and 70 Gram-negative bacterial species, with priority given to clinically relevant taxa and species for which useful online visual documentation is limited.
Phase 2: Extended visual documentation
The second phase will expand individual species pages with additional photographs showing species variability, identification challenges and occurrence in clinical material. A key objective will be to document selected aspects of antimicrobial resistance visually and to make this topic more accessible to a wider educational audience.
Phase 3: Evaluation and long-term expansion
The third phase will evaluate how useful the atlas is for its intended audience. If the concept proves valuable, the project will continue with additional species, new photographs, ongoing text updates and refinements based on user feedback and developments in clinical microbiology.
Antimicrobial resistance
Antimicrobial resistance is one of the central long-term themes of the project. The rise of resistant bacterial pathogens is not only a technical laboratory issue, but also an urgent clinical and public health challenge. Visual documentation can help make this problem more concrete, especially for students and readers who are beginning to connect laboratory findings with their clinical significance.
As the atlas grows, selected pages will include photographs illustrating resistance-related phenomena, such as characteristic patterns in antimicrobial susceptibility testing, clinically important resistant strains and diagnostic situations in which resistance has direct practical relevance.
Editorial approach
The photographs presented in the atlas are selected to show bacteria as they may appear in routine microbiological practice. Whenever possible, the image captions include information about culture medium, incubation conditions, specimen context and diagnostic relevance. The goal is not only to show attractive images, but to preserve their laboratory meaning.
Texts are written to balance scientific accuracy with readability. Species pages are developed for educational use and are reviewed with attention to taxonomy, morphology, clinical relevance, diagnostic interpretation and antimicrobial characteristics. Because microbiology is a dynamic field, some pages may be updated over time as taxonomy, nomenclature or diagnostic practice evolves.
Project status and support
As of July 2026, the introductory phase of World of Bacteria is not financed by external funding and is not directly supported by any institution. The project is being created because its authors believe that this type of accessible, clinically oriented visual microbiology content is still underrepresented online.
This independent status gives the project editorial flexibility, but it also means that development will be gradual. New species pages, additional photographs and text refinements will be added progressively as time, source material and technical resources allow.
AI-assisted development
The project uses AI-assisted tools, including ChatGPT, to support text drafting, editing, translation and technical development. All scientific content, image selection and final editorial decisions remain under human supervision.
AI-assisted tools are used as practical support during the development process, not as a replacement for laboratory expertise, scientific judgment or editorial responsibility. The final form of the atlas reflects human selection, review and correction.
Feedback
The atlas is being developed gradually, and feedback from students, clinicians, microbiologists and other readers is welcome. Suggestions may help improve image descriptions, clarify diagnostic explanations, correct inaccuracies or identify species and topics that should be added in the future.
